Chiefly letters, 1891-1909, to Cunningham of Tennessee, founder and editor of the "Confederate Veteran" (Nashville, 1893-1932), relating to the contents and circulation of the magazine, veterans' affairs in general, and litigation over the management of the Confederate Memorial Association. Papers, 1924-1945, consist of correspondence between Edith D. Pope, who succeeded Cunningham as editor, and manuscript dealers Forest H. Sweet of Battle Creek, Mich., and C. M. Crook of Birmingham, Ala., concerning the sale of memorabilia, and an article by Pope on Cunningham.

Sumner Archibald Cunningham (1843-1913) of Tennesee was the founder and editor of the Confederate Veteran (Nashville, 1893-1932). Cunningham served in the Confederate army in Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi. After the war he was an editor and agent for the Jefferson Davis Memorial Fund. Confederate Veteran was the official organ of the United Confederate Veterans, Daughters of the Confederacy, and Sons of Confederate Veterans.
